One of our favorite annual traditions is happening this week! Arts and the Park will return again, for the fifth time, to Capitol Reef. Don’t miss your chance to admire the art, the artists, and the inspiration – starting May 30th until June 2nd. Below is a brief summary of the scheduled events.
Wednesday, May 30th – Friday, June 1st – artists throughout Capitol Reef will begin creating their plein aire paintings. Most artists don’t mind if you stop and admire their work. If you’re in the mood, you can break out your own supplies and paint the scenery for yourself.
Friday, June 1st from 5pm – 7pm – all the paintings created during the last few days will be available to view during the Gallery Stroll. It starts at 5pm on Friday in the town of Torrey at Gallery 24 and the Torrey Gallery. Now is your chance to admire all the amazing pieces, and also see if there is anything you’d like to add to your collection. Most items displayed will be available for purchase on the following day. Also scheduled at 5pm is an interactive painting session with the community youth.
Friday, June 1st at 7:30pm – acclaimed artist Spike Ress will present a lecture on plein aire painting in Capitol Reef and the Colorado Plateau. The lecture will take place at 7:30pm at the Robber’s Roost in Torrey. Admission is free.
Saturday, June 2nd at 10am – a youth art program will take place at the Ripple Rock Nature Center in Capitol Reef. Stop by and instill the love of painting in your children.
Saturday, June 2nd from 6pm – 9pm – the final event will be the Fifth Annual Light on the Reef Exhibition and Auction. The panel of judges (lead by Spike Ress) will award prizes to the best plein aire paintings. Afterward an auction will commence, so be ready to bid on your favorite pieces. There will be live music provided by the Patrick Briggs Band, as well as refreshments. The whole thing kicks off at 6pm at the Saddlery in Torrey. Admission to the event is $10, payable at the door.
