Hunting near the Lodge

The 2011 hunting season is almost here. The Lodge at Red River Ranch hosts scores of enthusiastic hunters every year. For the occasion, we’ve jotted down a few of the things we know from hunting in Southern Utah.

Every year the state of Utah sells or allows lotteries for a certain amount of species-specific hunting permits. The most common hunts in Southern Utah are for deer and elk. Permits for antelope, bison, bighorn sheep, and moose can also be obtained. A limited amount of once-in-a-lifetime and predatory animal permits are also awarded to a lucky few.

Deadlines and fees for most of these hunts are during the summer, generally beginning in June. The price per permit varies according to species, gender, and population trends. We advise that you begin planning, and applying for, your hunting trip as soon as possible.

Open-hunting seasons for deer and elk begin in late August, with the archery hunts. Archers are allowed to hunt first, and often get the longest hunting season. Any legal weapon deer and elk season begins the first week of September and ends in October. Your permit information will inform you of the specific timetable in which you can hunt.

The highlands of Southern Utah are popular with both local residents and visitors in the hunting season. Many claim that the eastern slopes of Boulder Mountain are the best place to find game. We also suggest Thousand Lakes Mountain in the north. For those interested in guided hunting tours, we are able to suggest premier and qualified guides.

Because information on the hunting season can sometimes change quickly, we suggest you visit the Utah Division of Wildlife. wildlife.utah.gov/dwr/

Whatever, wherever, and however you choose to hunt, we hope you’ll have a great time exploring the forests of Southern Utah.
