The Fantastic Burr Trail

The Fantastic Burr Trail

Posted in: Outdoor adventures, Travel on November 11, 2011.

The Burr Trail is one of the best scenic roads in Southern Utah. Starting in Boulder, Utah, the Burr Trail winds 68-miles through unforgettable scenery to the town of Bullfrog, near Lake Powell. We at the Lodge at Red River Ranch love taking this route, and we’re pretty sure you will too. Here are some tips and pointers for anyone that wants to drive the Burr Trail.

The first thing you need to know is that a large part of the road is unpaved. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll need a high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicle – in fact most cars will be fine – but it does mean you’ll have to be aware of road conditions. Wet weather in any season can make the Burr Trail impassable. So keep an eye on the sky, and call the Capitol Reef Ranger station to check conditions.

The Burr Trail takes travelers through Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument, into the Waterpocket Fold country of Capitol Reef, all the way to Lake Powell. It’s an exciting drive with switchbacks and wide, open road. To make the experience even more exciting, we recommend getting out and stretching your legs on a hike or two. One of our personal favorites is Brimhall Bridges – this canyon narrows hike will take you to a spectacular double bridge, well worth the effort, plus the overlook is pretty cool too. Of course, there are lots of others that we’d be happy to tell you about.

Burr Trail is a drive that everyone who visits the Grand Staircase or the lower part of Capitol Reef should take. If you’re still not convinced, or need advice on the journey, come talk to us at the Lodge at Red River Ranch
