Picnicking at Single Tree

Picnicking at Single Tree

Dixie National Forest covers more than two million acres in Southern Utah. One of our favorite locations in Dixie Forest is on the west end of Boulder Mountain, about half an hour from Capitol Reef National Park. The road twists up the mountain to stunning scenic overlooks. (This, incidentally, is the road you take to Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument and Scenic Highway 12.)

All along this road you will find campgrounds that are perfect for family outdoor adventures. You can picnic, camp, and hike in the beautiful pines and aspens of Boulder Mountain. We at the Lodge at Red River Ranch really like one particular campsite toward the base of the mountain called Single Tree.

Single Tree campground is located about half a mile from Single Tree Falls. You definitely should hike to the falls if you stay in the campground. The trail gives you outstanding views of the countryside. Also nearby, is Lower Bown’s Lake, in which you can boat, fish, and swim. Of course, Single Tree is about thirty minutes away from Capitol Reef National Park, and can provide a very good base camp for your forays into the park.

Single Tree (and the majority of the Boulder campgrounds) is managed by an onsite camp host. All fees are paid to this host. A campsite cost ten dollars per night, and a half-day, non-camping pass costs five dollars (which is perfect for picnics and hiking.) Amenities include potable water and flush toilets.

If your looking for a little adventure off the beaten track, then we at the Lodge encourage you to check out Single Tree campground. It’s a pretty neat place.
