Happy Birthday Capitol Reef!

Happy Birthday Capitol Reef!

Posted in: Education, Historical places, Nature, Travel on July 14, 2012.

Capitol Reef National Park will celebrate 75 years of conservation this August. In 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt declared the Capitol Reef area a national monument. President Nixon subsequently changed the monument’s status to a national park in 1971. Since that time, Capitol Reef has welcomed millions of visitors to explore its beauty and its wonder. We at the Lodge at Red River Ranch invite you to come celebrate Capitol Reef’s 75th birthday with us this August.

The National Park Service and the Capitol Reef History Association are planning special celebratory activities. Although a full schedule of the events won’t be available until two weeks prior to the events, we at the Lodge have a tentative itinerary for the celebration.

On August 2nd a morning refreshment will be served at the visitor center and new exhibits wills be revealed. Ranger lead hikes will demonstrate the geology of the park. An evening program will focus on Capitol Reef’s history.

On August 3rd several more ranger lead hikes will cover other geological points of interest, and will expound on the flora and fauna in the park. The evening program will talk about Fruta’s historic orchards.

On August 4th cultural demonstrations about pioneer life in Capitol Reef Park will take place at the Gifford House. In the evening a “cowboy cookout” will take place. The final keynote speaker for the celebration will be Professor Tom Morris.

Of course, when you’re not at the scheduled activities we hope you’ll be exploring the many hiking trails in Capitol Reef. Capitol Reef is, in our opinion, the best national park in Utah, and we think this birthday party will be awesome.

For additional, and more detailed, information visit the national park site, or call the visitor center at 1-435-425-3791.
