April is Nature Month

April is Nature Month

Posted in: Education, Nature, Outdoor adventures on April 21, 2013.

April is one of our favorite months. The birds are back from their migrations, the fruit trees are blossoming and the desert sage is bright and fragrant. It is fitting that April is also the month in which the celebrations of Earth Day and Arbor Day (or, Arbor and Bird Awareness Day) are observed. There is nothing like springtime to make you appreciate nature.

Earth Day, in various forms, is recognized worldwide. Events, such as races and outdoor concerts, are held to commemorate nature and raise awareness about various conservation concerns. Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd in the United States.

Arbor Day is celebrated in all 50 states in the United States, and in many other countries as well. In Utah, it is observed on the last Friday of April – this year it will be held on April 26th.

Since April is the month in which we focus of so much attention on nature, we at the Lodge at Red River Ranch thought we’d suggest a few ideas to get you closer to the outdoors:

First, plant a tree. It is customary to plant at least one tree per family every Arbor Day. In fact many communities give young trees away to families. So go ahead and get your hands dirty.

Second, put up a bird feeder. You can build or buy a simple bird feeder for the birds in your neighborhood. We at the Lodge are especially fond of the hummingbirds that live here. Get some seeds, or nectar, and start seeing more birds around your property.

Third, get outside. Celebrate nature by being part of it. Go on a bike ride, take a hike, spend a weekend camping. We in Utah are lucky to have so many state and national parks. Get out and see them.

We hope you are enjoying April and that you take part in Earth Day and Arbor Day.
