Special Places – Golden Throne

Special Places – Golden Throne

Posted in: Special Places Report on August 5, 2013.

Capitol Reef National Park is a place of spectacular beauty; it has so many areas of special, natural wonder. Unfortunately, very few people get to visit these special places. In an effort to make these hidden treasures known to the public, we at the Lodge at Red River Ranch have created this blog series to highlight the best-unknown places of Capitol Reef. Watch for new “Special Places” posts. This post focuses on Golden Throne.

Golden Throne is a fairly prominent rock formation in the Capitol Reef “skyline.” It can be seen clearly from outside the park. But while it may be hard to miss, not many people take the trouble to get up close.

The trailhead for the Golden Throne loop can be found on the west side of the scenic route road, about three-quarters of the way to the end. (Be aware that there is a five dollar fee per entering vehicle to access the Capitol Reef scenic road.)

The trail climbs steeply most of the way, revealing spectacular panoramic views, and depositing you near the base of Golden Throne. The hike is strenuous. It loops around so there is no back-trekking required. The Golden Throne loop is two miles long.

If you are a rock climber, you should definitely consider checking out this special place, as some of the best technical climbs are found on Golden Throne.

Since Golden Throne is one of the less popular trails, we advise you to take all the necessary safety precautions. Bring plenty of drinking water and a friend. And have fun visiting this special place.
