Rolling Out the New Scenic Drive
If you love an easy cruise through big desert scenery, this is a good moment to come. Capitol Reef’s Scenic Drive just wrapped up a full rehabilitation, and the classic route down to Capitol Gorge is back open — smoother, safer, and every bit as good as it always was.

The project kicked off on April 29, 2024 and finished up on August 25, 2025. Led by the National Park Service in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, it was really about modernizing a road that was originally built for 1960s-level visitation — without messing with what makes the drive worth doing in the first place.
What Changed (and Why You’ll Notice)

Resurfacing & repairs: The full length of Scenic Drive got new pavement and structural fixes, so it’s a smooth, quiet ride from Fruita all the way down to Capitol Gorge.
Safer curves & consistent width: Tight spots were widened — generally to about 20 feet, up to 23 in a few places — to make it easier for vehicles to pass on bends. Especially helpful if you’re driving a truck, RV, or pulling a trailer.
Better drainage: Re-lined culverts and improved drainage protect the road from spring runoff and monsoon bursts. Fewer washouts, longer-lasting surface. That’s good for everyone.
Parking & flow upgrades: Key areas — the Visitor Center, Chimney Rock, and Capitol Gorge — were reorganized and expanded so busy days feel a lot more manageable.
A Quick Timeline

Spring 2024: Construction begins with phased closures and detours while crews rebuild base layers and drainage.
Late 2024: Portions reopen as paving progresses; finishing work continues at lots and facilities.
Spring–Summer 2025: Final surfacing, striping, and access upgrades come together.
August 25, 2025: The project wraps up and Scenic Drive to Capitol Gorge is fully open.
Plan Your Drive

The Scenic Drive has always been one of our favorites out here — roll the windows down, watch the cliffs light up, pull over whenever the view demands it. With the fresh surface and the smarter parking, it’s easier than ever to take it slow. After the drive, circle back to Fruita for pie at the Gifford Homestead and a sunset that pretty much never disappoints. Get current road info from NPS • Read the project summary
